The cost of food

With anywhere from 50 to 100 guinea pigs in our care at any given time, our hay, pellet and vegetable bill is expensive. In an average week, our piggies eat 1-2 square bales of grassy hay, 5-7kg of Vetafarm Cavy Origins guinea pig pellets, and 8-10kg of fresh fruits and vegetables. Some of our special needs piggies also require supplements for skin and joint support.

The cost of housing

Guinea pigs are a prey species prone to stress, so while some people may consider beds an hides a luxury, we consider it essential to give our piggies a safe space to rest and relax. To be environmentally friendly, we opt for reusable bedding products that can be easily washed. But these items do occasionally need replacing once they've had enough wear and tear.

The cost of veterinary care

Visits to the vet are inevitable as a pet owner, even more so as a sanctuary that specifically takes on guinea pigs with terminal illnesses or special needs. A consultation, medications, diagnostic imaging, surgical interventions and follow-up consults easily adds up to hundreds, if not thousands of dollars. Our standard of care wouldn't be possible without your generousity.
